I'm sorry for jumping into this thread late without having read
everything. It does look like this is a really strange problem.

One thing I had trouble finding in all of these posts was the
specific version of which distribution Nathan is using.  Could 
it be RedHat 6.0?  There was an errata for the netkit-base
package, the description of which talks about strange ping
failures...

If that's not the distribution, what is it then?
