If you haven't already done this ...
'cat /dev/sndstat'
'cat /proc/ioports'
'cat /proc/interrupts'
Run these to make sure the device is *really* there. If not you probably
have a problem with your isapnp.conf file.
There are very good docs on sound cards in
"/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound" if you have the kernel source
installed.
