thanks for the tip about the wheel working with gnome and about imwheel.
Imwheel apparently grabs the wheel-up/wheel-down events and translates
them to keys. I found that by pressing the left shift key, the wheel
appears to emulate arrow-up/arrow-down. Weird thing is that when imwheel
is running, it appears to leave that shift key down as though it were
sticky or something. when i let it off, things resume to normal. E.g.
press the shift key, do some scrolling, then when I type, it's as though
the shift key were down. Press the shift key again, and back to normal.
Check out /etc/imwheelrc for more details, you can also create a
~/.imwheelrc
docs are in /usr/doc/packages/imwheel (i used the rpm to install it).
