[OLUG] scsi emulation

I'm trying to switch my Atapi cdroms over to scsi emulation so my cd-r
will work, but for some reason it's just not taking hold. I've removed
the Atapi CDROM support from menuconfig and enabled scsi emulation, but
it's still using native drivers. here's the procedure I've been doing:

make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make bzlilo
make modules
make modules_install

before doing this, I moved my /lib/modules/2.2.12-20 to
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20-old so there's no conflicts. but they're still
booting up with Atapi drivers. any suggestions?
