BTW, vi doesn't use a character to indicate a line in a file that
continues on the next line in the editor. The cursor will simply seem
to jump several lines as you pass up or down past a long line. You
could use either vi or emacs to correct the problem rather than
hexedit. The long line is the one bordered on the right by backslashes
in emacs or the one just before the cursor seems to jump several lines
when moving down through the file (or just after the jump when moving up
through the file) in vi.
You could also use pico. The long line is the one containing the dollar
sign. Pico doesn't wrap long lines. It successively scrolls to the
right as you move along a long line. So, just deleting the line with
the dollar sign in pico will do the trick.
