[olug] OT: Sonet fiber optic converter

My company is getting fiber optic put into our building.  I was told it
was a SONET network.  I don't exactly know what that means but I still
need to find out about hardware for it.  Specifically I am looking for
a fiber optic converter so I can plug this in to our existing router. 
I'm having a hard time finding what I need because I don't know the
terminology.  Could somebody point me to a place on the web that I can
look at hardware for this application and maybe give me some hints as
to what to look for in this type of hardware?
