I figured out what the problem is . . . 

Here's note for those who have not yet upgraded to 2.4.x . . . the old
config from 2.2.x (like ".config") files don't work with 2.4.x, even
though "make menuconfig" and "make xconfig" don't complain about them.  I
had to go back and manually configure IDE, PPP, sound, and serial
support.

But . . . the work to get to 2.4.x is worth it . . . wow, it's pretty
cool.  And noticably faster then 2.2.x
