I read the book that came with my Roadrunner modem and the company that
makes it does actually make an internal PCI cable modem.
I have no idea how much one would cost, or if it would be advantageous, but
I do remember being surprised that they existed.

*All* cable modem implementations I've seen use an "black box" (it probably
won't be black, but you get the idea) external to any computer. This is
all
any computer needs to be able to connect via Cox at Home:
