Easy easy.... Put these lines into your .htaccess file:
AuthType Basic
AuthName "My Site Name"
AuthUserFile /somewhere/outside/the/docroot/mypasswords.txt
AuthGroupFile none
require valid-user
AuthPAM_Enabled off
Then run htpasswd:
htpasswd -c /somewhere/outside/the/docroot/mypasswords.txt username
To add additional usernames and passwords just leave off the -c.
