[olug] More on Sound card problem

I went to the HOWTO's on playing sounds and it talked about some
problems and things to check.  One was doing the following:
cat /dev/sndstat
to check if things loaded correct for card.  Well it has the card type
and timer and one other line but the drivers and config sections are
empty.  What do I have to do to load them now the HOWTO just sorta
stopped there.   Thanks for any help.
