Yes, I have picked up used monitors locally. My success rate varies. And would not the shipping the monitor online negate any savings from procuring a monitor locally? Just a guess


I go over to Army Surplus in CB and have picked out a few, but have had poor results. Since the old man Bill will not let you plug in & test them - it is a real crapshoot whether the equipment will work or not. Remember, they get the surplus from Offutt & other Department of Defense locations. The equipment they get is the stuff the equipment custodians deem "unserviceable". The "unserviceable" term can vary greatly, from the stuff does not work at all, needs a small part or fix, or works great and the custodian does not want to have sitting around any more (the paperwork & wait to turn in unserviceable verses serviceable differs).

I have tried the college & state auctions, as well. Again, you can not (normally) test the equipment, and normally the ignorant fools that go there have no idea of the real value of the stuff is so the prices are crazy.

The best suggestion I have for monitors would be someone from this list, or from one of the local computer fair/swap meets. The vendors normally have a few monitors, set up & running for you to peruse; and with the competition between vendors you can normally get a good deal.

So, after getting stuck with the bad monitors from Army Surplus in CB - what do you do? Trying to get them fixed was a crapshoot - Millard electronics wants $150 just to look at it! Hell, you can get a used 17" for that (or less)! But my network of fellow computer hobbyists came through - I have the name & phone number of a fellow up in Blair that fixes monitors. I took six up to him the last time, and he was honest & straightforward with me on which ones were worth fixing & which were not. So I had two 17" fix for $65 each - he did not charge me for his time checking the others!
