Chris,
I see a number of people using GAIM.  GAIM is fine, but I've had good luck 
with Everybuddy.  Everybuddy supports AIM, MSN, YAHOO and ICQ in its base 
install (not plugins).  Also has file transfer, sounds etc.

It does require the jabber lib so if you are having trouble with Gabber, you 
may have trouble with this as well.
