Printers always seem to present a problem. The best solution I've seen is the
CUPS software/server. May I humbly suggest you try out CUPS to configure
your printer (CUPS runs as a daemon and is webconfigurable, be aware that as
a service on your machine it can be a security risk.)

This software was the only way I could configure our Textronix Phaser with our
DEC UNIX machines.
I use CUPS on my Mandrake 8.1 machine and a LaserJet 4 (with a Postscript chip
installed).
