I obviously misunderstood the scenario, did this user problem not crash the system? 
specifically that is what I was addressing, more specifically to your point, nothing.
I always portray myself as the administrator rather than a user, and from that perspective
I found myself thinking... user error, however, this is two fold.

#1 application file io should have been more robust and not remove data it still needs to read prior to writing 
the new data.
#2 system limits ( more specifically ) filesystem quotas should have been in place to ensure
users dont fill up filesystems, this would not eleviate your poorly written app issue, but your filled
fs issue.
