[olug] Word Doc/or rtf to pdf

Print the document to a Postscript  file.  Then use a free (advertising
supported service) such as
    http://www.ps2pdf.com/convert/convert.htm  (The service uses
ghostscipt.)
It will render the PS file to a pdf.  very nice and cheap.

To render a word or rtf file to PS open it in OpenOffice and print to a PS
printer but direct output to a file instead of a device.
