I use ps2pdf (the gnu program on my linux machine) ALL THE TIME and it
works great.  
a) Print document to PS file (windows can even be coaxed into doing this
by setting up a postscript printer, then printing to file).

b) ps2pdf ps_file.ps pdf_file.pdf


Done!
(I mostly do this to put documents on the web in pdf so Acrobat Reader
can read them, some people don't have gv or gstools to read my .ps
files.)
