[olug] Weird Font Server problem

Olug Members,
Recently, I switched from Mandrake 8.1 to Debian 3.0 (Stable/Woody)
and I have noticed strange behavior with regards to how true type fonts are
served via X's font server. xfs (the default X font server) appears to be
working just fine -- when I include it in my FontPath (if I take it out,
things freeze -- so I just leave it in place now), I get nice X fonts for
the GDM login screen, Gnome menus, etc. However, I have noticed that
intermittently (much more off than on), Evolution 1.0.5, Mozilla 1.0 and
Open Office.org 1.0 are not served the correct fonts. The problem seems to
affect either all applications or none (i.e. fonts look great in all apps or
they don't).
I've tried running other true type font servers and the problem
seems to disappear for a single reboot (or restart of xfs) but if I shutdown
and restart, my font problem reappears.
I'm running out of ideas here -- I've already read through the
Font-DeUglification HOWTO and searched the 'net.
Any ideas?!
