Right now I need to get it setup to just do firewall/dhcp. The next
step is to use it has a file server with samba. I know I should use a
different machine for each but this is for my friend and he doesn't
have any other PCs. Besides it only has to work for a DSL connection
on one side. My friend is a linux convert though. I've been running
my webserver at his house for over a year.
Linux webserver 2.2.19 #2 SMP Wed Mar 28 13:43:37 PST 2001 i586 unknown
2:37pm up 379 days, 18:45, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
and his webserver
Linux kramer2 2.2.19 #2 SMP Wed Mar 28 13:43:37 PST 2001 i586 unknown
4:14pm up 267 days, 22:41, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
He has 5 IPs. One for his personal use, one for his webserver, one for
my webserver, one for a wireless link to a friends house, and one for
his roommate. That doesn't leave any open ones. He wants to add a
file server so we thought a fileserer/firewall/dhcp server would give
him an extra IP if his and his roommates personal computers were behind
it.
I chose debian because of the strong debian support available on the
OLUG list. Also because I really like apt since I got the netinst to
work so well on a computer at work.
Carl, did you do a net install? which disks do I need? I was RTFM but
was not sure on how the network install worked since my driver disk
didn't work. I know the 2 cards in the machine are using the 8139too
module.
Thanks
Eric
