That was my big question -- why a symlink that is so funky in
permissions?

And yes, /dev/dsp2 has weird permissions, too:

gideon root # ln -s /dev/sound/dsp /dev/dsp2
gideon root # l /dev/dsp2

/dev/sound/dsp
