I had a Toshiba usb digicam that didn't work via
usb-storage.  However, all the Sony digicams (only 2)
I've thrown at usb-storage picked up without a hitch. 
I tried everything with the Toshiba, even wrote to
Toshiba for sh*ts 'n giggles to ask them for Linux
support, they said (rather coldly) 'No' (in a few more
words though).  Sold the Toshiba camera.  Life is
good.
