I had the same problem with SuSE 8.2
You have to make sure your /etc/X11/XF86Config file has on option under 
mouse configuration that says something like:
Option	"ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
I'm not completely clear on the details at the moment so you will want 
to double check with Google.
