Got it.
I just had the wrong driver selected. Cdrdao has 11 different drivers you can
pick from. I was using 'generic-mmc' and I should've used 'generic-mmc-raw'.
I checked the list of compatible drives here:
http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/drives.html
I tried the driver that worked with the closest model to my Philips (one model
down), and that worked ('generic-mmc-raw'). Now just to post my results (i.e.,
that it works with my model) to the cdrdao webpage.
One cool thing with cdrdao was being able to burn a 'secret' track before track
1.
