You could certainly do that.  Or you could reserve some space for later.

I'm not sure how much support for dynamic expansion of disk sizes the
current Linux file system options have, but *Nix is made to handle this
sort of thing fairly easily.  Instead of expanding a partition after the
disk size increases you could simply make an additional partition with a
mount point wherever you want in the original file system.  There are
probably limits to the number of times you can do this, but this would be
an easy solution.
