I'm running the Suse 9.1 from the Novell Resource Kit.

I found this from the following site:

How/where do I do this? (what directory, etc.?)  
(The first part before going to YaST (or all the way
through would be more helpful))
Installation Overview 

These installation instructions apply to the hp single
function ink and laser printers. Distribution-specific
instructions are provided below.

Instructions for installing your multi-function
printer (OfficeJets) can be found at
hpoj.sourceforge.net .

Step 1: Prepare your printer

Make sure your printer is powered on, and has paper
and ink cartridges installed
 
Step 2: Install HPIJS

Follow the instructions below

Step 3: Follow the installation instructions for your
distribution to configure your printer within your
distribution

Install HPIJS

This section addresses how to install HPIJS. In most
cases this is all you need to do.


Also, HPIJS is not spooler specific, although HP
recommends CUPS. Starting with HPIJS 1.4, HPIJS has
built-in support for CUPS and Foomatic. CUPS and
Foomatic support is optional via "configure" options. 

1. Download and install the latest HPIJS driver     
back to top.  You can download HPIJS here. 

The download includes the HPIJS source code and a
platform-independent automake/autoconf makefile. The
makefile will compile and install the hpijs driver. By
default the makefile will also do a Foomatic and CUPS
install. After downloading to your directory use the
following instructions. 

 # tar xzvf hpijs-1.x.tar.gz
 # cd hpijs-1.x
 # ./configure
 # make
 Log in as root on your machine
 # make install

2. Verify HPIJS is present 

You can verify HPIJS was built and installed correctly
with the following command.
 
 # hpijs -h

If installed correctly, you will see the following
displayed.

Copyright (c) 2001-2002, Hewlett-Packard Co.

3.  Now that you've installed the driver continue on
to the distribution-specific portion of the install. 


Distribution-specific instructions

Follow the distribution-specific installation
instructions below to configure your printer within
your distribution.


SuSE Direct Connect      back to top 

1.  Click "Menu --> System --> YaST2"

2.  Enter root password

3.  Choose Hardware from the left column in YaST
Control Center

4.  Click "printer" from the right side

5.  Choose the printer from the top and click
"configure"

6. If desired, change the "Name for Printing" to
something meaningful like "Deskjet5500_draft" or
"DeskJet5550_Photo" (see step 9 for hint)

7.Click "Next"

8. Select print mode, like "draft" or "photo" 

9. Click test printing and then "OK"

10.  When the printout has finished, click "Printout
Finished"

11.  Click "OK"

12.  Click "Finish"

13.  Click "Continue"

14.  Click "OK". This completes your installation.
