I have 2 Gravis Gamepads, 1 Saitek wireless and 1 logitech wireless. The
logitech I got off of ebay, they rest from Compusa. The Saitek and the
logitech both have digital or analog on the left, you can switch between
them by hitting a 'mode' button. I haven't got the right-hand analog stick
to work (haven't tried very hard). Both the saitek and the logitech have 6
buttons and 2 triggers, while the gravis gamepads have 4 buttons and 4
triggers.
The only problem I have is the sometimes lack of precision. I believe this
is a mame thing, tho (or probably an arcade thing). The arcade roms expect
input to come from a joystick that is limited to 4 exact directions by
hardware (ie you can't do 'diagonal up-right' because the joystick is
limited to a 'cross' for movement). So when you play mame with a gamepad
(or a joystick) you have to be very precise with your movements. I have a
lot of trouble playing pacman with anything other than the keyboard,
because I try to 'slide' from up to left on the gamepad and I don't get it
_exactly_ left in time. The analog stick is a little better. 1942 in
particular is great fun with the analog stick, because your movements
don't have to be exact. Same with Gauntlet. Q-bert, on the other hand, not
so much. Or donkey kong.
I'm just getting into it, though, so maybe I need to invest in some more
arcade-specific hardware.
