AFAIK Evolution can read and write both mailbox formats as well, if 
entering obscure commands into a text-based mail reader isn't your cup 
of tea ;)

Personally, I just run my own IMAP service (speficially Cyrus IMAP). 
Easy to back up, don't need to worry about who did what to my email, etc.
