Sure thing - meetup is "a convenient, non-threatening way to connect to
other people who share similar interests and live nearby' (from their web
site). So, yes in some ways it is (as you put it) a social/common
interest gathering.

In many towns there were crossovers between already existing organizations
and the original meetups - including some on the same night, but they
would be in a different location.
Now that Meetup has changed to an organizer based design for planning the
when & where to have the meetups, many pre-existing organizations are
'taking over' the meetup topic & syncing them with their organizational
meetings.
That being said, there are some good opportunities for meeting in
interfacing with others in the local area that have similar interests. I
have met some of the local PHP developers as well as Macintosh users and
talked techie, g33k stuff; as well as met individuals with similar music
tastes for conversation and social interaction. I would think it all
depends on what the meetup topic is.
If you want any further info, feel free to talk with me at an OLUG meeting
or contact me off list.
