Meanwhile you hook up a home made antenna to one of those spiffy new 
netgear/linksys "ultra-G" piece of junks and you have now trashed the 
entire spectrum of 2.4 GHz and who knows how much you are leaking over 
into the adjacent licensed bands...

There actually is a reason for the FCC certification process and 
amazingly enough it is not just to keep some beaurocrat in a job (for a 
change).
