Joe,

I plan on being @ California Taco's tomorrow.

I use HandBrake ( http://handbrake.m0k.org/ ), originally for BeOS and recently ported to GNU/Linux and OS X, on both my home Gentoo desktop and my Mac PowerBook G4 
to rip/encode DVDs into MP4 format. 

My player of the day (it also does streaming) for MP4s is VLC ( http://www.videolan.org/ ), another cross platform application.
