[olug] encrypted login to PHP-bb forums?

Greetings all!

I have never worked with forums, so the question posed to me I am lost on.
A friend is setting up a new web site with forums using PHP-bb
[www.phpbb.com], and I raised the question about encrypted logins. It
looks to me that the user ID & password is passed in the clear (a bad
thing IMHO). So I was asked to help figure out how to encrypt the login.

Oh good, my big mouth. ;)

If it makes any difference, the web site & the forum is on a Linux box
