[olug] SYN Protection

I am making a new barebones Linux Router/Firewall and I am curious to know the opinons of everyone on the best SYN Protection methods, this router will be handling approx 1000+ connections/ redirects at once and on a 10/10Mb line in Norway. 
Hardware to be PII or PIII with approx 128MB RAM.
any thoughts?
Does anyone have an example script? A really good one?? :D
