I don't seem to have trouble with my CentOS 4.3(64) box and cdrecord provided by the "everything" install. I have recorded many ISOs with:

cdrecord -v -pad speed=8 dev=1,0,0 FC4-i386-disc1.iso

$ uname -a
Linux smtp.r3g.net 2.6.9-34.EL #1 Thu Mar 9 06:03:30 GMT 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

$ cdrecord --version
Cdrecord-Clone 2.01-dvd (--) Copyright (C) 1995-2004 Jörg Schilling
