Depends on the FTP server, for something that natively supports LDAP
(like ProFTPd) you just need to construct the proper LDAP query.

For console access your best bet is to load Microsoft's SFU (services
for unix) on your domain controllers. Once you load that you can use
NIS, nss_ldap+pam_ldap, etc.
