I feel that GNOME is ugly (the default stuff anyhow), slow (last time I tried 
to, it was too slow to use), and very single-minded (it has virtually no 
options to configure it how I like).

Open source (and LEGAL!) drivers work great for many ATi cards and (all?) 
onboard Intel graphics.
