[olug] Getting sound in Fedora 8

My computer (called wyerie) has never played sound. As wyerie had a VIA
motherboard, this never surprised me and I didn't much care. Yesterday I
installed a usb sound card that I ran across in an add and was inexpensive.
It failed to play a sound. After considerable fumbling around (as I have no
experience with sound) I got to Soundcard Detection (on the menus) which
calls itself Audio configuration.
On the Sound test tab, the selected card was changed from VIA to Vendor:
JMTek, LLC. - Model: SSS USB Headphone Set - Module: snd-usb-audio.
The Sound test now works but Amarok doesn't play an old radio program which
works on the F8 machine (woolerie) which I use as a Media Center. (All the
packages loaded on woolerie have been loaded on wyerie but not the reverse.)
In fiddling around I (on the Settings tab) changed to Audio Cards Order to
JMTeck at Index 0. On the System tab the Report button (Generate sound log
file /root/scsconfig.log) was pressed after looking at the log file and
seeing that it still had VIA as the sound card. Now the log file has JMTek.
No joy with Amarok. Reboot. No startup messages. Sound test with Audio
configuration still works. No joy with Amarok.
Does anyone have a clue on getting sound with Amarok?
What seems to be relevent from the log file:
