After running i[pf]config on his system, your would probably need to log in
to http://gateway.address/  from his box.

I've seen a lot of dsl modems use their serial number as default password...
with 'admin' as the user.

Undoubtedly :).  To avoid standard brute/scans, I'd suggest moving ssh away
from port 22 after things are worky.
