There was a thread a few months ago about this.  Basically, some security
minded folks think you should run commands with escalated privileges, not
run a shell with escalated privvies.  Thus, you shouldn't have a root shell,
but rather `sudo command` for each special thing you need to do.

While not in full agreement with the philosophy, we do have a new guy here
at work that does *everything* as root while fiddling with his development
stuff.  A tad irritating :)
