It depends on your phone, in some cases linux might see it as a modem
device, if you have a cable, just like chris I was able to set my hated HTC
Touch which runs Windows Mobile 6 to internet connection sharing on, and i
set it to share on the usb cable i have for the phone as the laptop I was
running Linux Mint on didn't have bluetooth. It worked like a charm

So if your trying to use a phone with a data plan and the phone allows
tethering the answer is maybe.  If your trying to use PPP and the phone as a
modem, I'd say that also depends.

What kind of phone do you have?
