"Sony has announced that a new firmware upgrade for the PlayStation 3,
to be released on April 1st, will remove the "Install Other OS" option
from all versions of the  console. The announcement in the company blog cites "security concerns" as the reason for the removal. "

A tiny Linux media-center box would work.

But a PS3 can also do the job. If he owns a 50" Plasma, and doesn't
have a BluRay player currently, then the PS3 makes a lot of sense.
