Depends on your school of thought.

My personal preference is Slackware, but I grew up on Slack.

At work we use CentOS due to prior RH experience a decade ago.

I'm sure others here will mention a Debian based distro (Debian or Ubuntu,
etc).

Lastly, I'm sure someone will mention Suse.

Most of the mainstream distro's are decent and should let you accomplish
your goals.  From there it's personal preference.
