Network manger icon is part of the notification area applet. (I think)

If the login /logout does not work.  That is a gnome "applet".  Right
click on a blank area of desktop "bar" and see if it is still added.

You may want to check if NetworkManager service is still running?

/etc/init.d/NetworkManager status
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart
