[olug] Using vi in Ubuntu 10.04

Might this Ubuntu instance be in a virtual machine (e.g. VMWare)?
We ran into a similar problem with vim where the arrow keys wouldn't
work (e.g. the down arrow is a carriage return). It turns out this
isn't a problem with vim, but the entire VM (pressing the down arrow
in bash is a carriage return as well). We haven't solved the issue
just yet, but the work around is to SSH into the VM from either the
guest or other machine on the network and all works as expected.
