Empathy is suppose to be a pidgin replacement that is in the ubuntu
repositories, it does support/have the freenode IRC plugin in it, I have not
used it so I cant say for sure how well it works.

I'm tired of fighting Pidgin and the (broken/borked?) IRC chat portion of
it.  Anyone have a decent looking GUI to use on my Ubuntu desktop?  (I heard
of Trillian, but it's not in the apt-get repositories...)

I tried a few CLI versions in a Gnome terminal window but was less than
impressed...
