I don't remember who ran the tests, but someone did a comparison of
the various free VoIP (and video) options (Skype, MS's voice chat,
Apple's voice chat, Google's chat, etc) a little while back. I think
I saw it from LifeHacker. Either way, they threw in the Google Voice
Chat halfway as a joke, using the Web plugin for it, and expecting it
to fail miserably next to the other options.
However, by the time they finished testing, they decided it wasn't
just competitive with the others, but better. They said it offered
the best overall performance of all the applications they tested.
It's accessible via the installable Windows client, and supported on
Linux, too.
