Ubuntu would probably work well. You might consider Mint, it comes with
the multimedia codecs so it requires little or no fiddling. I use their
KDE version. They also have an LMDE desktop which is Debian based and
their own Cinnamon desktop which is based on Gnome but apparently looks
more like Gnome2 which some people like. I haven't used these last 2.
