OK, I booted with a live CD (U9.04) and mounted /dev/sda1 as /mnt/boot.
Here's what boot/grub/menu.lst says:
------------
#boot=/dev/sda
timeout=3
chaintimeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
#hiddenmenu
title Upgrade to Fedora 16 (Verne)
kernel /upgrade/vmlinuz preupgrade repo=hd::/var/cache/yum/preupgrade ks=hd:UUID=5d291686-6388-4b4b-b101-5177984c8f69:/upgrade/ks.cfg
initrd /upgrade/initrd.img
------------
Alas, there is no /upgrade/ directory anywhere in the boot or root
partitions. The root of /boot has:
dr-xr-xr-x. 6 root root 1024 2012-01-13 13:26 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 60 2012-01-14 03:33 ..
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 119949 2012-01-07 15:02 config-3.1.8-2.fc16.i686
drwxr-xr-x. 3 root root 1024 2008-10-31 16:35 efi
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 178436 2011-12-07 22:55 elf-memtest86+-4.20
drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 1024 2012-01-14 03:34 grub
drwxr-xr-x. 3 root root 7168 2012-01-13 13:26 grub2
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 16344768 2012-01-13 06:31 initramfs-3.1.8-2.fc16.i686.img
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1583279 2012-01-13 06:30 initrd-plymouth.img
drwx------. 2 root root 12288 2008-11-10 05:16 lost+found
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 176760 2011-12-07 22:55 memtest86+-4.20
-rw-------. 1 root root 1828211 2012-01-07 15:02 System.map-3.1.8-2.fc16.i686
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 4520896 2012-01-07 15:02 vmlinuz-3.1.8-2.fc16.i686
Is there any place from which I can get the /upgrade/ dir so that I
can continue my upgrade, or is this a lost cause, requiring a fresh
reinstall? When I said that I'd backed up the important bits of this
system, that meant just /home and /usr/local. I don't have a backup
of any of the system directories, since this laptop is little more
than a portable terminal.
