not sure if its best for you, but i do this:

dyndns account pointing to my house. your "server" runs ddclient for your
dynamic public address so you always have DNS pointing you home.

open one incoming port forward on your gateway. pick a weird port.
something hard to remember is best. point it at your "server". install sshd
on matching strange port.

now you have an encrypted tunnel for any traffic you need to reach home.
disable root login - predictable name allows password brute forcing.

in my situation, upstream is limited, so be creative with bandwidth use,
and dont saturate upstream or youll kill the downstream as well.
