There is a pretty good comparison chart/tool here:
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-charts/view.  The site keeps up with
new products and tests, reviews, and rates them based on a number of
factors.  Personally I've had a reliable experience (so long as OPPD is
providing power) with my home brew FreeNAS-based solution.  Just a desktop
case, bootable compact flash card, and a bunch of drives attached to a RAID
controller.  Been running pretty rock solid for 5 years now (again so long
as it has power).

IMHO, Buffalotech seems to have some of the best price per TB offerings out
there, with decent features (e.g. DLNA, iTunes, iSCSI target, etc.).
 Additionally, when looking at the prices, these are diskful systems as
apposed to BYOD, so the price is the price and ready out of the box vice
having to also buy a bunch of drives (though I see these are coming down in
price these days).
