[olug] apt-get performance issue

I recently got an Ubuntu LTS system as an appliance at work. Since I was 
learning the apt-* tools for that device, I converted my desktop to 
LinuxMint.

On the appliance, doing apt-get update goes pretty well until I get to 
"Reading package lists..."

This part of the process can take up to 10 minutes or more. On my Linux 
Mint desktop, it's QUICK, (under 4 seconds).

Anyone ever experience anything similar? Might I have done something to 
inflict this on myself?
