I've always had to recompile the kernel to get the soundcard working.
There is a way to tell if this is necessary, but I don't know what it
is. ld something?...
You don't have to recompile. You can run: make xconfig, from Xwindows,
and look at the kernel makefile settings. If they seem to describe your
soundcard properly, then back out, else: make some changes and follow
the instructions in the /usr/src/linux/README.
